Gill Net -River Wye

Postby esoxpete » Thu Sep 12, 2013 7:49 pm

On Thursday the 5th of September 6 British Pike Squad members fished the river Wye on a private estate in Herefordshire,

Cumbrian based 46 Year old Paul Christian from Barrow in Furness was wading waist deep in the River Wye and noticed white string in his path under the clear water, he grabbed the string and realised it was attached to a Gill net, the net was submerged inches beneath the surface and was attached to the far bank, BPS member Chris Brookshaw helped Paul Christian Haul the 30 meter long net in. It was apparent that the net had not been in the water longer than 24 hours by the lack of fish or debris contained in the 4 inch mono netting.

The net was reported to the Environment Agency enforcement team leader Mr Al Watson, within 24 hours Mr Watson visited the British Pike Squad based at their Hotel in Hereford who were there for a Pike competition and interviewed Press Officer for the BPS 56 year old Mr Peter Timmis from Stoke on Trent and Paul Christian regarding the find.

EA's Mr Watson said "this is the most sophisticated net they had come to their attention in over 3 years" he also reported that possibly CCTV will be installed in the area to monitor the situation.
Al Watson urged that everyone needs to report incidents like these as they build up a picture of the hotspots of illegal poaching and then we target them.

Nice one Pete. I have posted your report on the PAC forum. I'll let you know what reaction it gets from there.
